Understanding Korean Age
In the Korean age system (also known as "세는 나이" or "counting age"), a person is considered 1 year old at birth, and everyone gets a year older on New Year's Day, regardless of their actual birth date.
This means your Korean age is typically 1-2 years older than your international age, depending on your birth date and the current date.
Since January 2023, South Korea has officially adopted the international age system for most legal and administrative purposes, but the traditional Korean age system is still used culturally.
Why Korean Age Differs
The Korean age system has historical and cultural roots dating back centuries. It reflects the time spent in the womb (counted as one year) and the collective aging of society on New Year's Day.
This calculator helps you understand both your Korean age and international age, which can be useful when communicating with Korean friends, planning travel to Korea, or understanding Korean culture.
